CIOB and CORBON combine to elevate professional standards in Nigeria

On 24 April 2025, it was announced that two leading organisations in the construction industry have pledged to work together to raise professional standards and promote sustainable practices in Nigeria’s built environment.

The Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON) and the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), sparking a new chapter of collaboration between Nigeria’s national regulatory body and the global professional institute.

The partnership will improve collaboration and promote sustainable construction practices across Nigeria by combining CORBON’s understanding of the country’s building regulations and development needs with The Chartered Institute of Building’s expertise in construction management and leadership.

Caroline Gumble, the Chartered Institute of Building’s CEO, welcomed the agreement, adding: “I am delighted we have signed this MoU with the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria. This is another international partnership with an organisation which shares many of our goals and can join us in promoting professionalism and supporting knowledgeable and committed built environment professionals.

“The Chartered Institute of Building is a global community of more than 50,000 members and today’s signing only strengthens our network and allows us to support more construction professionals in Nigeria and beyond.”

Chukwudi Ononogbu, a Chartered Institute of Building member from Nigeria, said he is proud to see the partnership between CIOB and CORBON come to life, adding it will open new opportunities for training, mentorship and networking.

He said: “This collaboration represents a significant step for students, new entrants, and mid-career professionals. It offers a truly global platform to engage with the best in the built environment sector, share knowledge, and raise professional standards across borders.

“For companies, institutions, and universities, this is a meaningful opportunity to connect through capacity building, research, and a shared vision of what good looks like.”

CORBON plays a pivotal role in licensing and regulating construction professionals in Nigeria, and aims to equip builders with professional knowledge, skills and innovation towards sustainable excellence

The Chartered Institute of Building, meanwhile, supports more than 50,000 members worldwide, including a strong and growing membership base across Sub-Saharan Africa. Through the new partnership, CORBON will gain access to the Chartered Institute of Building’s vast network of knowledge and training resources.

“The partnership between CORBON and the Chartered Institute of Building provides a platform for knowledge exchange and better mutual understanding of both operating climes,” said Bldr. Samson Opaluwah, CORBON Chairman.

“It also affords Registered Builders in Nigeria the opportunity to broaden their horizon of practice and embed global best practices towards further ensuring safe and sustainable development of the built environment in Nigeria.”
